“Character is that which reveals moral purpose, exposing the class of things a man chooses or avoids.”  – Aristotle

It all started back in 1999, when the university I attended decided to challenge our youthful minds with Aldous Huxley’s novel – Brave New World.

Back up some 7 decades and you would find one of the most forward thinking writers of our time. Many like me would contend that Huxley is one of the most brilliant minds of our times. He has such a meticulous understanding of societal context and human nature that put him as a great philosopher/ intellect in a league of his own.

In 1931, Huxley contrived a world of casted citizens of Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons, as well as the Savages (a breath of fresh air) in his totalitarian welfare-state, “The World State”, based in the “year of our Ford 632” (equivalent to AD2540). Indeed, we do live in a world that much resembles Huxley’s vision in the form of Fordism (coined after Henry Ford’s automobile empire or assembly line) in Brave New World. Our world is becoming more and more homogenous in our seeking of modern living splattered with the consumerism of mass-produced luxury products or brands, and this way of life is extending rapidly into the third world. We are predictable in our relentless tendency to be despicable and unscrupulous in order to achieve success, power, fame or/ and wealth. Our desires over our ethics!

Why is our world seemingly struggling to upkeep and protect the majestic capitalist economic system at all costs, even if it means killing our spirit and earth habitat? When we materialize our Lord into “our Ford”, we really ought to rethink our course of pursuits in life. Thankfully, many of us are not quite there yet.

Sustainable Design, Ethical Marketing … Are these just dreamed up terminologies or can they be practiced in reality? Maybe we should think harder and exert more effort before we compromise with the populist methods of our world. Maybe we should never deter from what our heart tells us is right and good regardless of what our world propagates, like character John the Savage in Brave New World.

Being loving, unselfish, moral, naïve, independently thinking are prized traits upholding our human dignity/integrity. Unbearable as it may be  to stand up for what is good and over-rule human weaknesses; it is the mere way of being.

What better way to brand than to belittle your next door neighbour? There is tension as there is brotherhood between countries like USA Canada; UK Scotland; Singapore Malaysia; Norway Sweden. We have seen this idea being done and overdone but this time it is done on jeans!

The apparel brand, Anti Sweden, is the creation of (you guessed it!) Norway. It is fashion war to ram out dominating Swedish brands like Cheap Monday, Whyred and Acne in the Scandinavian apparel market. Anti Sweden builds on Norwegian patriotism, banding together with one of the largest export from Norway, namely black metal music (although one might think it is relating to their black gold – petroleum)!

It is no wonder that their first jeans are produced in the darkest black possibly, unisex and manufactured up to 666 pieces only. Retailing normally at 999 NOK (over £100), you can make a purchase with a devilish discount at 666 NOK if you turn in a pair of your old Swedish jeans. This brand is not for the mainstreamers. Already establishing a cult following, more rebellious, gory and dead fashionable fans are bound to grab their pair of black collectable cigarette-cut Norwegian jeans.

The branding is so fabulously ingenious that even the Swedes dig it.

—————

Anti Sweden is the brainchild of Norwegian based design agency ANTI. All apparels are produced as limited editions instead of regular apparel collections. In jeans model 666 Anti Sweden worked together with San Diego based illustrator Justin Bartlett. More jeans, t-shirts and jewelry are to follow with more gruesome artist collaborations.
